About Graham Goldthorpe – Stone Consultant

Graham Goldthorpe MCIOB – Stone Consultant – has worked in the natural stone industry for over 30 years and has extensive experience in all aspects of the trade. From beginning his career as a trainee draftsman / quantity surveyor in 1980, Graham rose through the ranks to become works manager at one of Europe’s largest stone working plants, combining work with studies at Huddersfield Technical College and Sheffield Hallam University where he gained professional qualifications leading to Corporate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building.

In later life Graham co-founded and set up in business as a masonry contractor and granite producer, operating throughout the UK as a sub-contractor on a wide range of large scale commercial, private residential and restoration projects. The company became one of the UK’s leading natural stone specialists, working with some of the country’s best known architects and developers.

More recently, Graham has set up his own natural stone consultancy business, based in the west Yorkshire town of Holmfirth. He advises clients, architects and developers, worldwide, on how best to approach a ‘stone job’, using his experience to guide them through the various stages of the project from stone selection, technical assessments, quarrying, production and testing, through to cost planning, design, project management and installation – all linked to the relevant BS / BS EN codes of practice and essential CE marking requirements for natural stone.

Over the years Graham has been involved in many prestigious projects across the UK: in London – Buckingham Palace, Whitehall, The British Museum, The V & A Museum, London Bridge City, The Royal Mint and Paternoster Square: in Edinburgh – The Scotsman HQ, Scottish Equitable HQ, Sheraton Hotel, Usher Hall, The Royal Mile and Festival Square: in Glasgow – Blythswood Square, West George Street and the High Courts of Justiciary, together
with work on many of Historic Scotland’s castles, including St. Andrews, Fort George and Stirling Castle. He has also dealt with many public realm hard landscaping projects throughout the UK and abroad and advised on stone projects in New York, Beverly Hills CA, Dublin, Paris, Brussels, Bermuda and Oman, along with several notable private residences in the Scottish Highlands and in his own county of Yorkshire.

Graham is a champion of natural stone, particularly indigenous materials, and has spent all his working life promoting its use and trying to convince clients, architects and developers of its merits – solidity, inherent durability, natural beauty and uniqueness. He strives to provide a high degree of personal service and a strong commitment to the clients he serves.
